For over 60 years, Helmut Fischer GmbH has developed measurement instruments for industrial quality control in the town of Maichingen. In continuation of this success story, the company has enlarged its premises and, in May of this year, dedicated a brand new manufacturing and warehousing facility, which will open up new opportunities for the future.
"Over the past several years, we had steadily expanded both the range of products offered by Fischer and our worldwide sales organisation, and this growth had simply taken us beyond the limits of our physical plant," explains Managing Director Thomas Wolf. Therefore, during the past year and a half, the company added approximately 8,000 m2 of light-flooded floor space, accommodating new, modern work stations for the assembly, testing and shipping of high-precision instruments for coating thickness measurement, material analysis, micro-hardness measurement and material testing.
Of the approximately 200 employees working in Maichingen, now almost half of them are settled in the new building, ensuring that, for example, the new merchandise management system is optimally utilised, or that the delivery times for international customers can be kept as short as possible. One important link in this logistics chain is the new high rack storage area, which contributes tangibly to the efficient flow of goods.
In the assembly department, new production processes for the handcrafted devices are being rolled out and integrated with logistics and administrative processes. At the same time, Fischer is constantly on guard to uphold the levels of precision and robustness that one has come to expect of its instruments. Here, they like to say: You can only guarantee the quality of the overall product if you also keep your eye on the smallest parts. This is why Fischer places such high value on vertical integration in its manufacturing. As many components as possible are developed and produced in-house, for example in its onsite CNC milling and lathing centres.
In addition to the manufacturing area, the company's logistics and quality assurance departments have also moved to the new facility: wherever high-calibre measurement devices for industry are produced, thorough and effective quality controls must be near at hand. For final testing and inspection of the super-sensitive hardness instruments, the company built out a special area in the basement of the building atop a 57-tonne, float-mounted concrete floor. This quality assessment laboratory is thus de-coupled from all other vibrations in the building, ensuring precise results. Comparable specialized facilities for quality control have also been implemented for its X-ray fluorescence and other products from the Fischer portfolio.
The new manufacturing and logistics building positions Fischer ideally for the future and underscores its commitment to the Maichingen location. A new environment has been created to allow ingenuity and outstanding workmanship to set new standards in the area of measurement technology.
Knowledge, expertise, experience – based on these principles, FISCHER has been developing innovative measuring technology for coating thickness, materials analysis, microhardness and material testing since 1953. Gauges from FISCHER are now used the world over – wherever accuracy, precision and reliability are required.
